Literature is closed book — you can’t take the texts in. Language also includes the separate Spoken Language endorsement, assessed in school and reported alongside the grade.

What the examiner is marking

Literature answers are marked against four assessment objectives. In plain English:

AO1

Know it, answer it

Understand the text, answer the actual question, back it up with quotations.

AO2

How the writer does it

Analyse language, form and structure — and the effect on the reader.

AO3

The world around it

Link the text to its context — when it was written and for whom.

AO4

Write it well

Spelling, punctuation, sentences and vocabulary — accuracy earns marks.
